The Cockefair Chair was established in 1964 to honor Carolyn Benton Cockefair, an exceptional teacher who devoted her life to education. The chair’s activities continue as a monument to Mrs. Cockefair’s belief that a community needs “open and responsive minds” if it is to be politically and socially healthy, and serves those goals by bringing scholars, writers, and public intellectuals to UMKC in a continuing education program.
In Fall 2021, the Cockefair Chair presents three fascinating courses.
State of the Media
Prof. Steve Kraske and Dave Helling of the Kansas City Star are back to discuss the confusing, ever-in-flux state of the news media in 2021, both in Kansas City and nationally. This course will examine the present, past, and future of professional newsgathering operations in the United States. And Helling and Kraske will challenge participants to think like reporters as they consider the merits and ethics of the newsgathering process as it is evolving in the 21st century.
