Cultural Tradition collection for Life Wise STL

The students in the Pierre Laclede Honors College’s seven Cultural Traditions classes create service to go kits to support the community programs run by LifewiseStl. Each class collects and creates their own kits based on the needs provided by Life Wise STL. The collection takes place through October and delivery of items will take place at the end of Engagement week.

: The poverty simulation happens in September and the students spend October organizing and collecting the service to go kits. Final collection and drop off takes place during Engagement Week by October 22. 2021.

Cultural Tradition collection for Life Wise STL

Service to go kits are needed to support the various programs run by Life Wise STL. After engaging in a poverty simulation and discussion run by Life Wise STL, students in each class vote on what they want to do to help the organization. The peer mentors in each class organize and create the kits so that the students can support a variety of different programs.

Impact

The Cultural Tradition classes are all required for first year honor students and this community engagement action was a opportunity for freshmen to start their academic career thinking about community engagement. The poverty simulation served as a learning tool for the students to realize that the St. Louis community has a lot of needs and this served to inspire the collections. Prior year collection of kits consisted of: 700 diapers and 16 boxes of wipes, 10 first aid kits, 17 health and beauty kits, 30 thank you kits for volunteers, and 27 after school and camp kits and all will benefit various LifewiseStl programs.
