Pollution in China and the Effect of Driving Restrictions on Carbon Emissions

Please join us as we welcome Dr. Shunfeng Song, Professor of Economics at University of Nevada, Reno. 


Professor Song will discuss China's carbon emissions and its efforts to control them. In particular, Professor Song will examine the real-world impact of driving restrictions on traffic speeds and carbon emissions using data from a policy in Xi'an during 2018.


Dr. Shunfeng Song received his B.S. in mechanics from Peking University, China in 1983 and Ph.D. in economics from the University of California-Irvine in 1992. Currently, he is a professor of economics at the University of Nevada.


In 2008, Dr. Song was honored as a Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education of China. He is a former president of the Chinese Economists Society and an adjunct professor in a number of universities and research institutes in China, including Peking University – Lincoln Institute Center for Urban Development and Land Policy, Zhejiang University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Wuhan University. Dr. Song’s research areas include urban economics, transportation economics, regional science, Chinese economy, and applied microeconomics. He has published over 70 academic articles in English journals (including Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Urban Economics, China Economic Review, Land Economics, Economic Letters, Urban Studies), numerous papers in Chinese journals (including Jingji Yanjiu and Chinese Quarterly Journal of Economics), six books in English, and three books in Chinese.  He is an associate editor of Social Science Journal and The Chinese Economy, serves on editorial boards of China Economic Review and Journal of Urban Management, and reviews manuscripts for numerous academic journals. As of October 7, 2022, Dr. Song’s Google citations reached 4648 with h-index 24 and i10-index 52.
