Dr. Devin Burns of Missouri S&T’s psychological sciences department teamed up with Mr.Terry Patton of Rolla High School to teach students about psychology and cognitive processes through sensation and perception. Burns intended to present science exhibits on how the human brain perceives and interacts with the world around it. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt on plans for any in-person presentations. This set back did not stop Dr. Burns’ desire to teach Patton’s students about sensation and perception. Undergraduate students in Burns’ program stepped-up to the challenge and created short videos on various topics including optical illusions, showing students how to do taste tests, and describing how taste can change when our noses are plugged and unplugged.
Even though plans changed, the event was a big success and Dr. Burns and Mr. Patton plan to do the originally planned in-person exhibition when it is safe to do so!
