UMKC's Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) is an interdisciplinary degree designed for students who have completed at least 30 hours of military or technical credit as part of an Associate of Applied Science degree program or who have completed an Associate of Applied Science degree. Students may transfer up to 60 hours of military credit or technical credit to transfer to the B.A.S.
The program provides a foundation of knowledge and develops the skills most sought after by employers such as working in teams, professional communication, problem-solving and understanding a complex, global world.
Students can select a specialization in one of five areas:
Data Analytics
The Data Analytics emphasis area tackles a growing need in the region for students with data science skills. Students work with experts from across UMKC in Computer Science, Math and Statistics, and Management to develop technical knowledge for a career in data analytics.
Business and Organizational Leadership
The Business and Organizational Leadership emphasis area focuses on the ability to work effectively in teams, critical thinking skills, and the ability to analyze and interpret data. This innovative emphasis area will equip students with the tools to succeed in a range of careers, complementing the skills developed in the BAS core.
Health Services Management
The Health Services Management emphasis area is tailored for students wishing to broaden their leadership skills and join the region's health services workforce. Students develop critical thinking skills while examining the physical, biological, behavioral, business, and social aspects of health and identifying ways to improve health outcomes in diverse populations.
Digital Media
The Digital Media emphasis area is designed to combine digital media skills with prior experience to prepare students for jobs in the digital media industry. Students develop skills in social media, online streaming, video production, and digital advertising.
Digital and Public Humanities
The Digital and Public Humanities emphasis area trains students in the creative application of data science and digital tools to texts, archives, and visual materials. This training positions students to use digital technologies and data research methods to enrich the public's understanding of humanity and to promote solutions that improve the quality of life for citizens of the Kansas City region.
