In this course Professor Barton will explore the representation of race in 19th and early 20th century American literary works which are set in Missouri and/or were written by Missouri authors. This exploration will focus on one of the great American novels, Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, along with Percival Everett’s more recent James. In addition, other lesser known works will be discussed, such as William Wells Brown’s Clotel, written by a fugitive slave from Missouri, and Pauline Hopkins’ Winona, a 1901 novella set partly in Kansas City during the border skirmishes in the late 1850s.
