Luke Pellegrino, a first-year optometry student at UMSL, has been raising Electra, a six-month-old black lab puppy, through the nonprofit Dogs Inc. His passion for optometry and guide dogs began in high school while working with low-vision patients at Dream Oaks Camp. Witnessing the impact of vision loss and the high cost of guide dogs, he committed to making a difference. Now, Pellegrino trains Electra in various settings, including classes and public transportation, to prepare her for future service. His dedication has earned praise from Dogs Inc., where he is the first optometry student to participate in the program.
Pellegrino’s commitment extends beyond puppy raising; he recently received a U.S. Navy and Air Force Health Professions Scholarship, covering his optometry tuition. After graduation, he will serve on a naval base for three years, gaining experience before opening his own low-vision practice specializing in guide dogs. He sees this as a lifelong mission, blending his love for healthcare and dogs to create meaningful change. If time permits, he hopes to raise another puppy, continuing his journey of service and advocacy for individuals with vision loss.
