Heroes to Hives

Missouri proudly hosts the first state chapter of the national Heroes to Hives program. Offered through Michigan Food & Farming Systems, this unique initiative focuses on improving the financial and personal well-being of veterans by providing free professional training and fostering community development through beekeeping.

About

Participants gain extensive beekeeping knowledge and develop personal and professional relationships that offer new opportunities and ensure long-term peer support. They learn about the vital role of pollinators in U.S. agriculture and are equipped to protect honeybees through sustainable beekeeping practices.

The Heroes to Hives program spans nine months and combines online lectures with hands-on training. From March to November, students access 2-6 hours of pre-recorded lecture content each month, allowing them to learn at their own pace. Practical training occurs from April to October at the Heroes to Hives apiary located at the University of Central Missouri Mitchell Street Farm, MU Southwest Research Center, and Three Rivers College Farm and Rodeo Arena. This training covers hive handling, inspections, pest and pathogen management, and beekeeping ergonomics. Upon completing the course, students receive a certificate of completion from Michigan State University Extension.

Training

Heroes to Hives (H2H) will conduct on-ground training at three locations: the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center, the University of Central Missouri Mitchell Street Farm, and Three Rivers Community College. This training will be available from April through October and will include hive handling, colony inspections, pest and pathogen management, and beekeeping ergonomics. Students in the program can choose to attend one or multiple sessions.

Those enrolled in the online course will receive information about these on-ground sessions, which are open to registered participants and their dependents aged 18 and older. To sign up for the online course, please visit here.
