Irish Studies: Poetry reading with Siobhan Campbell and Eleanor Hooker

The Smurfit-Stone Corporation Endowed Professorship in Irish Studies presents a poetry reading with Siobhan Campbell and Eleanor Hooker, hosted by Prof. Eamonn Wall

Siobhan Campbell's latest collection is Heat Signature (Seren Press) which includes work awarded the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Prize. She won the Irish Poem of the Year Award in 2021 and her chapbook, That Water Speaks in Tongues won the Templar award.

Siobhan is Senior Lecturer at The Open University where research into creative writing practise in pressurized environments has led to projects in Iraq, Lebanon and Northern Ireland. Recent work appears in Deep Time 2 (Black Bough), 100 Poems to Save the Planet (Seren) and the Poetry Jukebox curation, Ambiguities: imagining Northern Ireland's futures. Critical work includes essays on Richard Murphy and Padraig Fiacc (PNReview) and she is co-editor of Eavan Boland Inside History: critical essays (Arlen/Syracuse).

Eleanor Hooker is an Irish poet and writer. Her third poetry collection Of Ochre and Ash (Dedalus Press) is the recipient of the 2022 Michael Hartnett Award. Her other two collections with the Dedalus Press are A Tug of Blue and her debut The Shadow Owner’s Companion, which was shortlisted for the Strong/Shine Award for the Best First Irish Collection. Her chapbook Legion (Bonnefant Press, Netherlands) was published in 2021. A 2021 recipient of the Markievicz Award, her poetry book for that award, Where Memory Lies, is due for publication by Bonnefant Press in 2023. 

Eleanor’s poetry has been published internationally in Ireland, UK, USA, Holland, Romania, Hungary, India, Australia and Italy (forthcoming). Her work has appeared in literary journals including Poetry Ireland Review, POETRY, Poetry Review, PN Review, Agenda, The North, The Stinging Fly, Winter Papers, New Hibernia Review, New England Review (forthcoming), and Archipelago (forthcoming). 

Eleanor is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Limerick. She holds an M.Phil. (Distinction) in Creative Writing from Trinity College, Dublin, an M.A. (Hons) in Cultural History from the University of Northumbria, and a B.A. (Hons 1st) from the Open University. Eleanor is a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London (FLS). She’s a helm and Press Officer for Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat. She began her career as an Intensive Care Nurse and trained as a midwife at the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin.
