Jessica Gargus, assistant vice chancellor for student health and wellbeing at Missouri University of Science and Technology, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Dr. Elizabeth Cummins Women’s Advocate Award at Missouri S&T. She was honored during a reception today (Wednesday, April 9) at Hasselmann Alumni House.
The Women’s Advocate award is given annually to any Missouri S&T employee, regardless of gender or job designation, who demonstrates commitment to women on campus through mentorship and advocacy and by setting an example through professional achievement. As part of the award, Gargus received a professional development stipend funded by Missouri S&T graduate Cynthia Tang, founder and former chair of Insight Industries Inc.
The event also honored Missouri S&T’s Woman of the Year, Dr. Jessica Cundiff, assistant professor of psychological science and director of the ADVANCE program at Missouri S&T.
Gargus joined the university in 2012 as a health educator. Prior to joining Missouri S&T, Gargus served as a nutrition program associate and health educator at the University of Missouri’s Phelps County extension office.
“She doesn’t just plan and organize programs, she actively participates herself, demonstrating that she values each experience,” writes one faculty member. “Colleagues and students look up to her as a mentor who respects each of them for their individuality and their unique contributions to the campus.”
“Her dedication, passion and genuine care for our community have made a profound impact,” writes a student nominator.
“She is passionate about the health and wellbeing of the campus community,” writes another nominator. “She will leave no stone unturned, no question unanswered, no student’s best interest neither unspoken nor unmet!”
Gargus holds a master’s degree in health education and promotion and a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and fitness, both from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and is a certified health education specialist. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis.
