Sir Harry Bhadeshia, whose research related to steel earned him a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2015, will speak at Missouri S&T April 16-17 for the university’s 27th A. Frank Golick Memorial Lectureship.
Bhadeshia, a professor of metallurgy at Queen Mary University of London and Emeritus Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, is known for developing several new steels, including carbide-free steel used in railway lines and super bainite, a steel used as an armor.
At noon on Wednesday, April 16, he will discuss the scientific evolution of steel during a talk, titled “The Wonder of Iron” in Room 125 Butler Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Refreshments will be available prior to the talk beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The following day, his talk, which will be more technical, will be titled “The Intriguing Alloys of Iron, By Design?” Bhadeshia will discuss the potential to create new steels — both as concept-alloys that may have limited practical applications and those that could be produced at scale to address real-world problems.
Refreshments will be available at 3 p.m. in the McNutt Hall Commons, with the presentation to follow at 3:30 in Planje Auditorium, located in Room 204 McNutt Hall.
Both talks are free and open to the public.
Bhadeshia has authored or co-authored over 700 papers related to metallurgy, as well as several books. He earned a Ph.D. in metallurgy in 1980 at the University of Cambridge and has spent his career working as a researcher in academia.
He is a fellow of multiple bodies, including the American Welding Society, the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Science Academy, the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
About the lectureship
A. Frank Golick is a 1918 metallurgical engineering alumnus of Missouri S&T. In 1969, the lectureship was created in his honor with a memorial fund established by his widow, Loree, to bring nationally recognized metallurgical engineers to Rolla to present lectures and interact with students and faculty.
