Dr. Joseph Smith, a professor in Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Linda and Bipin Doshi Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, is set to take the reins as president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) beginning in 2025, the organization recently announced.
“With over 60,000 members, AIChE is the world’s leading organization for chemical engineers,” Smith says. “For over four decades, I have been proud to be involved with this institute, which works to support and promote our profession. Over the next year, I look forward to strengthening and maintaining our programs and resources, which my predecessors have done a remarkable job building.”
Smith’s first experience with AIChE was in 1982 when he was a student at Brigham Young University and volunteered for the group. A year later, he was elected president of the university’s student chapter and hosted the Rocky Mountain Regional student conference.
As a faculty member at Tennessee Technological University in the late 1980s, he served as a student chapter advisor and hosted the Southeastern Regional student conference.
Throughout his career, he has been an active member of several AIChE committees and assisted with multiple competitions, including the national student paper competition, which he co-chaired for over 20 years.
Most recently he served on AIChE’s national board of directors as treasurer and secretary.
Smith has been a member of the Missouri S&T faculty since 2011, and he was named an AIChE Fellow in 2014. He also serves as chief technology officer of Elevated Analytics, a company that provides engineering analyses for the chemical and petrochemical industries that he co-founded and led as president from 2016 to 2018.
