Mizzou Youth Experience

The University of Missouri and Mizzou Athletics collaborated to provide a mutually beneficial opportunity for underserved and underrepresented youths across the state of Missouri. The Mizzou Youth Experience will offer “Show Me” Academic Learn Shops! The “learn shop” programs aim to give 7th and 8th graders a unique inside look at the college experience and all of the benefits of pursuing a college degree at Mizzou. Nearly a dozen colleges and departments at Mizzou are hosting hands-on “learn shops” in the areas of Math, Science, Technology, Health and Journalism to deserving 7th and 8th grade students. After the “learn shops” are completed, these students will join the tailgate and also receive the t-shirts, tickets, food and attend the football game.

Impact

For example on Saturday, Sept. 14, Mizzou Athletics welcomed middle-school students from urban areas of Kansas City and St. Louis to campus for the Mizzou Youth Experience. Tickets to that Saturday's game vs. South Carolina were just the beginning for the more than 2,000 children who were in attendance. The group received a campus tour led by the Mizzou Ambassador program. A program of Mizzou Athletics speakers followed with talks from Howard Richards, Brian Brown and Mizzou Wrestling Coach Brian Smith. The group then moved to Memorial Stadium for Mizzou's game vs. South Carolina.
