Space – The Final Frontier

Use your math and science skills to design, build and launch a small spacecraft with a high-altitude balloon.

July 13 - July 16
Event
Space – The Final Frontier

Space may feel far away but Space - The Final Frontier Camp is only months away and offers an intense, hands-on challenge to design, build, and fly a small satellite. This camp is unlike anything campers will have ever experienced before and is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter the edge of outer space.

This summer, curiosity knows no bounds when the wonders of the cosmos come to life. Dreaming of distant planets or fascinated by the science of space? This camp provides the perfect launchpad to explore the final frontier.

Using high school-level math and science skills, each camper will design and construct a small spacecraft that they will then help launch on a high-altitude balloon to 100,000 feet. Throughout the camp, instruction will include satellite building and testing, laboratory tours, and interviews with aerospace engineering faculty and students.

The camp will conclude with a high-altitude balloon launch, during which campers will track their satellite as it travels to the edge of space. After the satellites are recovered, campers will receive images and data captured by their satellite from the edge of space that have never been seen before!

Camp Activities include:

  •      Introduction to soldering and electronics basics
  •      Introduction to Arduino programming and sensors
  •      Design and construction of satellite structure
  •      Ground testing and troubleshooting
  •      Launch logistics and tracking
  •      Q&A with Aerospace Engineering Students
  •      Tour of Space Systems Engineering Laboratory

Space is Limited: Early registration is recommended. Campers will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis, based upon date of registration and when payment is received. Waiting lists will be maintained and filled in the order that they were received should cancellations occur.
