Spanish Lake and Business Communications

In cooperation with the Spanish Lake Community Association and the Spanish Lake Community Development Corporation, UMSL students in Honors Business Writing create and develop professional business communications designed to meet community needs and goals.

Spanish Lake and Business Communications

Honors Business Writing has an applied practical experience that offers rich possibilities for productive and meaningful participation in community engagement. While cultivating their own academic success and professional development, students directly apply their skills and experience toward meaningful projects that support the needs and promote the goals of underserved and/or challenged local communities.

In spring 2020, the students worked with the community of Spanish Lake in North St. Louis County on specialized projects focused on increasing awareness and pride in the strengths of the community and on marketing and promoting continued development and enhancement of community objectives.

Grand Challenge: This engagement combines academic endeavor with practical experience for students and offers increased information and awareness for members of the community. While the engagement applies primarily to the Education category, there may also be future benefits in the Economy category based on enhanced community image and proposal projects for attracting businesses or project funding.

Impact

This engagement offers significant potential for the community to pursue goals and initiatives by providing valuable access to resources and services that currently are not available or that are not adequate to fully meet the needs of the community. In addition, this Engagement offers enhanced opportunity for student learning and development as well as for hands-on experience that promotes student satisfaction and realization of their goals to “make a difference.”
