The Government-to-University (G2U) Initiative is a" network of networks", created by the Volcker Alliance, that has tasked itself with bringing government and university leaders together to strengthen the government’s ability to deliver on its mission. G2U is built on the premise that the performance of government institutions depends on the training and education of talented public servants.
With only 7% of the federal government workforce under the age of 30, compared to 23% in the private sector, and an increasing number of trained federal employees approaching retirement, the need to deliver new talent is real.
A pilot G2U network, started in 2019, led by the Mid-America Regional Council and in conjunction with the University of Missouri - Kansas City has since grown with government-university partnerships from Los Angeles, California to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Each regional network is able to accomplish the unifying goal of connecting government and university leaders together in order to strengthen the public sector talent pipeline because of the shared core values of public service, connectivity, preparedness, state of the art governance, inclusivity, and peer-to-peer learning.
With these core values in mind, G2U regional networks reach out to area nonprofit, civic, and private sector leaders who are also interested in strengthening the relationship between government and university leaders, encouraging them to become G2U partners.
G2U partners can keep in touch with the movement by joining the G2U Resource Exchange. The Resource Exchange provides periodic information, ideas, and best practices from across the network.
Through networking with a full range of leaders, G2U hopes to achieve the defined success criteria it has set for itself such as top university graduates employed in government jobs, and elevation of the talent pipeline into government as an urgent national priority.
