OneCity Stories: A St. Louis Youth Writing Program

The Gateway Writing Project, in partnership with local organizations, invites young writers from across the Greater St. Louis area to join us in June 2022 to share their perspectives and experiences as youth growing up in St. Louis. Onecity Stories program participants will create and publish multimedia projects with the support of experts in the journalism, film, and radio broadcasting fields, as well as build relationships with a community of fellow writers.

OneCity Stories: A St. Louis Youth Writing Program

Onecity Stories is a 3-week writing program for high school students from the Greater St. Louis area. During the three weeks, participants will cultivate their stories and create multimedia products with the help of experienced writing teachers and experts in the newspaper, film and radio broadcasting industries. The summer program will conclude with a publication event for participants and their guests, and additional writing and publishing opportunities will be available for participants throughout the following school year.

During week one, participants will collaborate with journalists from the St. Louis Post Dispatch to document their STL stories. Topics of study and exploration will include: editorial writing, photojournalism, the facts within fiction writing, citizen reporting and the role of social media.

During week two, participants will work with radio broadcasting professionals from St. Louis Public Radio to discover the power of the spoken word. Topics of study and exploration will include: news broadcasting, radio interviewing, curating radio content, and spoken word poetry.

During week three, participants will explore the art of filmmaking with experts from Cinema St. Louis to craft their own films. Topics of study and exploration will include: storyboarding, filming, and editing.
