UMKC Center for Neighborhoods

Housed in the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design (AUPD) - The Center for Neighborhoods at UMKC provides leadership training, organizational development, applied urban planning research, and technical assistance to neighborhood organizations and their leaders. -We assist neighborhood organizations through partnerships using an asset-based community development model. -We conduct collaborative outreach and research to address community-identified priorities for Kansas City neighborhoods. -We work with partner organizations to build the capacity of local neighborhood organizations and homeowner associations. -We cooperate with other existing centers, programs, faculty and students with a specific interest in the health and welfare of neighborhood organizations in our region. -We recognize the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to address the issues faced by neighborhoods in our region.   [caption id="attachment_493" align="alignnone" width="1024"]

Impact

The UMKC Center for Neighborhoods has demonstrated a positive impact on neighborhood and community building efforts in the past three years. We have worked with more than 160 volunteer leaders from 62 unique neighborhood associations, home owners associations and community organizations. These participants have reported raising more than 1 million dollars in direct funding to their neighborhoods and organizations as a result of the participation in our neighborhood leadership programs. Our impact includes improving the quality of local leadership and connection between the University, local offices of state agencies, and the City of Kansas City Missouri.
